Letting Life Flow Through Me

How To Make Your Vision The Anchor in the Storm?

I remember my driving instructor telling me to keep my eyes on the middle of the road so the car wouldn’t keep swerving from side to side. When I first started driving, I did not know where to keep my eyes, and the car/hands followed where my eyes went. Once I got the hang of driving, I knew how long I could keep my eyes off the road before I got off track. Now, hold this thought.

You’ have got to think about big things while you’re doing small things, so that all the small things go in the right direction

When I was doing an MBA at London Business School, I needed to articulate my vision for the application and the recruiter, and, in general, I was supposed to know where I was headed. I struggled with it a lot - anything that I came up with seemed shortsighted - until I landed at ‘Being a better version of myself every day and inspiring others to do the same, every day.’ It took years for me to internalise this vision - even now, sometimes it’s good to remind myself of it that this is my north star. This is where my eyes are on the road of my life. Now, hold this thought as well.

In my current role, my team’s previous vision was to build a single trusted source of truth for data across an entire division of my company. Guess what - that’s what they did or were on the track to do so. But it is a herculean task in terms of scope, budget and schedule - and that meant that it became more academic rather than practical. In a corporate setting, you have to deliver results, so when I took on the role, we decided to pause the program and make it more real/practical. As someone coming in from the outside, I can see clearly how the team’s vision has led us to where we are now.

One of the reasons so few of us achieve what we really want is we never direct our focus;

Hence, this blog is about the importance of vision, the significance of where you keep your eyes on the road, because that’s where you are headed. It is a very crucial decision because if you do not choose wisely, you will end up somewhere you did not want to go. I am trying to figure out the new North Star, which we can reach by slowly turning the current ship, since what the team has accomplished so far cannot be undone overnight. It is a fascinating exercise as there are so many items to consider - the customers, the return on investment, the associates themselves, and it will require us to course correct at regular intervals to see if the destination where we are headed is still where we want to go.

It makes you wonder - what is your vision, your family’s vision, your teams’ or even your country’s vision? And if they are aligned, then you are on the right track; otherwise, there is guaranteed to be some friction down the line - because every carriage on the train has to be headed in the same direction. There will come a time when every carriage will have to decide whether it wants to be on this train or not - because if even one carriage decides on a different course, it is not suitable for the train overall or the carriage itself.

Hence, the vision, whether personal, company- or country-level, is not something to be taken lightly. They are small pivots that will set the direction of the rest of your life. What is your personal vision?
